The French of Paris, 1954
The French of Paris. Photographs by Sanford Roth. Text by Aldous Huxley. Harper & Brothers, New York, n.d. (c. 1954). 20 pp. text + 112 gravure reproductions.
As an expatriate in Paris throughout the 50’s, Sanford Roth photographed many of the best known artists and writers of the day including Dufy, Leger, Matisse, Picasso, Utrillo, Vlaminck, Colette and Cocteau. Working for magazines such as Fortune, Harper’s Bazaar, Life, Look, Oggi, Paris Match, Stern, and Vogue he shot what became iconic images of celebrities such as Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Jack Lemmon, Paul Newman, and, perhaps most notably, James Dean, whom he befriended on the set of the film Giant (he was with Dean on the trip that ended in his fatal accident, and photographed the aftermath).
